The UK's telephone network is changing. The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be switched off in December 2025. All businesses will need to switch to another service before then
Copper phone wires have served our country since the worlds first phone call in 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call to his assistance Thomas Watson. They have kept businesses and services moving and have become a huge part of our daily lives. But because they are so old, they need replacing as they are no longer efficient, are becoming less reliable and don't serve our growing need for data.
That is why the old copper wire network is being retired in December 2025. By this point all businesses and consumers will upgraded to a digital phone line providing a faster and more reliable service. This will help to protect our future and ensure we stay competitive on a global scale.
To make this all possible, businesses must take action and make the switch to digital and a phone service that is delivered via the internet.
From September 2023, businesses across the country cannot purchase PSTN and ISDN lines or add additional features.
At the end of December 2025, all fixed line services will be switched off. If you haven't switched you will no longer be able to receive or make calls
So what's the alternative. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a solution that transmits voice calls and data using an internet connection.
To support this, Openreach are rolling Ultra Fast Fibre broadband to 25 million homes and businesses. It gives speeds up to 10 times faster and has 80% less faults.
Once Full Fibre has been rolled out into an area, the old copper network will be switched off as it doesn't make sense to operate old technologies alongside. As such businesses will need to make the change quicker than 2025, depending with Full Fibre comes to your location.
